Dr. Nitya Nanda
Dr. Nitya Nanda is an economist, institutional leader, and public policy expert with over three decades of experience in research, executive leadership, consulting, teaching, and policy advisory. His work spans corporate governance, industrial policy, sustainability, international trade, investment, climate change, agriculture, healthcare, and economic development, with a particular focus on the political economy and institutional dimensions of public policy. He has worked extensively across India, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
Currently Professor at the Council for Social Development (CSD), New Delhi, Dr. Nanda previously served as its Director (2020–2025), leading one of India’s premier social science research institutions through the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. During his tenure, externally funded research projects increased by approximately 50% despite a difficult funding environment. He also secured ICSSR-recognised status for the institution, substantially enhanced faculty research productivity, expanded strategic collaborations, and led a comprehensive redesign of CSD’s website, strengthening the institution’s visibility and outreach.
Earlier, Dr. Nanda held senior leadership positions at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and previously worked at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and CUTS International. Over his career, he has been associated with more than 40 research and consulting projects, serving as Principal Investigator for about half of them
He has advised the Government of India, state governments, the World Bank, the European Commission, and several United Nations agencies, including UNCTAD, UNDP, UNEP, and UNESCAP. He has also contributed to national policymaking through committees and advisory groups constituted by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, NITI Aayog, and the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council.
His governance experience includes serving on the Executive Council of TERI School of Advanced Studies, in addition to membership of advisory bodies, editorial boards, and expert committees. He has authored nearly 140 publications, including books, journal articles, book chapters, monographs, and policy reports. His major publications include: “Expanding Frontiers of Global Trade Rules”, Routledge, London & New York (2009) and “India’s Industrial Policy and Performance”, Routledge, London & New York, 2021, and the forthcoming title (edited) is: “Navigating Indian Economic Policy: Dealing with the 21st Century Challenges”, also from Routledge. He is a frequent keynote speaker at national and international conferences.
Dr. Nanda’s current interests include corporate governance, ESG and sustainability, industrial policy, international trade, global value chains, foreign investment, climate resilience, energy transition, and public policy. He welcomes opportunities for collaborative research, policy advisory, executive education, keynote speaking, and service on corporate, institutional, and advisory boards.
